Primarily exposed by Lithuanian Psychologist Aushra Augusta in the 1970's — Socionics integrates previous works from Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud and Antoni Kępiński.

It has since become a growing field of study successfully describing the development of the 16 relationship types with reasonable accuracies.

Socionics — a conceptual framework

The framework is built from a set of concepts linked to a planned or existing system of methods, behaviors, functions, relationships, and objects. A conceptual framework might, in computing terms, be thought of as a relational model.

Socionics does not currently represent a commercial product. It is simply a series of concepts, ideas and principles rolled together to form understandings of how the social world works.

Do I wish to know more about my personality type (PType or simply, PT) aka "social role"?
Do I wish to know what relationships exist between different "types" of people?
Do I wish to know how society works from a "big picture" perspective?

Socionics is an "alpha invention" (reference to Augusta, founder of Socionics, an "ENTp") and follows a similar mantra as the GNU/Linux project.

What's my "type"?

The best place to start I think would be the 16 Personality Types page. In addition feel free to check out Type Discovery and How to Discover my Type.

Everything else is self-evident…

The rest as they say should be elementary to you. After an appreciation of the 16 personality types you can then explore the 16 relationship types between them. As you may have noticed I'm not placing too much emphasis on knowing your "type" because a big picture perspective on the whole system of relationships is more important in my view.

Tools for the practical psychologist

The various small groups represent (to me) various ways of grouping the 16 personality types together into comparable themes and social effects. Thus as 'tools' they help with confirming and identifying personality and relationship types.

There is no "right" or "wrong" way to figure out people and their relationships. All that matters (to me at least) is an end result in constructing appreciations on a per-person and per-relationship basis with the standards set forth in Socionics.

I couldn't ask for a better "intellectual hobby" of going about my daily life and making "connections" between people. Now all I need is to move "alpha" concepts to the "beta" stage. In other words, to make this Socionics resource look as "pretty" as possible for larger market appeal.
